What is a Flies?

Flies are considered pests primarily due to their role in spreading diseases. They can carry bacteria and pathogens from decaying matter and waste to food and surfaces, posing health risks to humans and animals. Their rapid reproduction leads to large populations, making infestations common. Flies are also attracted to unsanitary conditions, contributing to hygiene issues. Their presence can be particularly bothersome in homes, restaurants, and food preparation areas, where they can contaminate food and create an unpleasant environment. Additionally, certain fly species can cause damage to crops and livestock.

 

  • Flies can spread disease, many fly species are known to spread disease to humans. In fact, the common house fly is suspected of transmitting at least 65 diseases to people.
  • Flies multiply quickly, A single fruit fly can lay around 500 eggs in her lifetime and the entire life cycle from egg to adult only takes about a week.
  • Houseflies tend to stay within 1-3km of where they were born but willtravel up to 30km to find food. They are favor breeding in garbage cans, compost heaps and pet areas.
  • Flies will eat virtually anything, from fruit to animal fecal matter an will often times find their way indoors in search of food.
